Description

French painter, illustrator, and stage designer, Georges D’Espagnat, pursued an unconventional path in art, avoiding traditional schools to study part-time at the Académie Colarossi in Paris under Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois and Jean-André Rixens. Early exhibitions at the Salon des Refusés and Salon des Indépendants in the 1890s marked his artistic debut, showcasing his connections to impressionism in works like “Suburban Railway”. Known for his friendships with Renoir, Signac, Cross, and later Maurice Denis, Bonnard, and Vuillard, D’Espagnat’s artistic endeavors included travels to Morocco in 1898, creating vivid paintings such as “Moroccan Horseman.” He boarded at Renoir’s home for six years and, after serving in a World War I camouflage unit, he purchased a country house in Quercy, where he painted landscapes and interiors. Despite his earlier reservations, D’Espagnat later taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and continued painting until his death, leaving a lasting influence on French art.
