Description

”Back in 1946, while visiting New York City, the Mitchells had seen an exhibition of paintings by Georgia O’Keefe. Fred had been moved by some of the powerful landscapes, with their monumentality and simplification of form. Here was Modernism that he could admire and accept. Now, at San Luis Obispo, he incorporates these elements into, perhaps, the most expressionistic work he is ever to do.” *

It was on this sabbatical to central California that Mitchell produced a renowned series of monumental landscapes reflecting the beauty of this region.
Golden California, painted in the late summer light is the most iconic of them all.
