Peter Lanz Hohnstedt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1872. From the 1920s on, he was represented by galleries in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and throughout Texas.
He won the gold medal at a national competition of wildflower paintings which established him as one of the most popular landscape painters in the country, and was a member of the Southern States Art League, New Orleans Art Association, Art Association of Seattle, life member of the Little Rock Art Association and the San Antonio Art League. In New Orleans, Hohnstedt was commissioned to paint numerous historical city landmarks.
He exhibited at the Witte Museum (Edgar B. Davis Competition) in 1929 and won two awards, competing against an array of the finest landscape painters of the day including Dawson Dawson- Watson, E. Martin Hennings, O.E. Berninghaus and Jose Arp.aThe Witte Museum (San Antonio) then commissioned him to spend the summer of 1933 recording the Big Bend Country. As a result, the Big Bend Room at the Witte Museum contains many of his monumental landscapes.
Bluebonnets is a wonderful example of his mature style and is housed in its original frame.
