Spangenberg, George (1907 – 1964)

San Diego artist, George Spangenberg, painted this scene of the Al G. Barnes circus during the 1930s. The circus would travel around the country during the depression and come to San Diego each year for the local county fair. It brings the viewer into the eerie night world of the circus. One of Spangenberg’s best works.
