Eugène Villon was a French artist who was a gifted student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nice. He received his first commission at the age of sixteen and became known for his landscape paintings, which he created using various mediums. He traveled extensively throughout France, Europe, and the Maghreb, bringing back works that captured the light and atmosphere of the places he visited. Villon was a member of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts and the Société des Artistes Français in Paris. He co-founded the Société des Aquarellistes Lyonnais in 1934 with Antoine Barbier and was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1937.
The harbors of Douarnenez were the backbone of the fishing industry in Brittany, France, in the 1920s and 1930s.
Douarnenez, Bretagne is an excellent example of Villon’s finest work.
